22nd-24th January 2005, HIARCS 9.5 on a Palm PDA played a four game internet match against the strong Grandmaster Jan Gustafsson of Germany. GM Jan Gustafsson is a rapidly rising GM with a FIDE rating of 2616 Elo which puts him in the top 100 chess players in the world! HIARCS on Palm PDA scored a sensational match win 3-1 with 2 wins and 2 draws achieving an unprecedented 2809 Elo performance rating (for comparison in Jan 2005 Garry Kasparov rates at 2804 Elo)
The match took place on the Chessbase Play Chess Internet Server in the machine room. The rate of play was game in 30 minutes with 10 seconds extra per move.
All the games were hard fought and our respect goes to GM Jan Gustafsson for taking up the challenge and playing for the win in each game. You can play through all games here or each game individually below:

This is the first time in history that a handheld chess program has won a match with a GM.
2nd June 2005, HIARCS 9.5 on Palm PDA played a four game internet blitz match against the strong Russian Grandmaster Sergey Volkov who is rated 2682 Elo on the play chess server. HIARCS on Palm PDA scored another sensational match win 3-1 with 2 wins and 2 draws achieving an incredible 2875 Elo performance rating.
The match took place on the Chessbase Play Chess Internet Server in the machine room. The rate of play was game in 5 minutes with 3 seconds extra per move.
16th September 2005, HIARCS 9.5 on Palm PDA played a four game internet rapid match against the Polish Grandmaster Piotr Bobras. HIARCS scored another sensational match win 3-1 with 2 wins and 2 draws. HIARCS on Palm has now played 12 games against strong Grandmasters achieving a superb record of 6 wins, 6 draws and no losses!
